Compare a short forest route with the much longer cave-and-cascade hikes, and plan a realistic Samegrelo day.
For an easier introduction choose Kaghu; reserve Toba and Oniore for a guide-led hiking day that follows the correct Balda and Toba valley routes.

Waterfalls Near Martvili: Pick Kaghu, Toba or Oniore
Martvili is a small Samegrelo town with more waterfall choices than the name of its famous canyon suggests. Georgia Travel highlights Kaghu, Toba and Oniore as separate sights with distinct settings, while the Agency of Protected Areas describes additional caves and gorges in the surrounding limestone terrain. The most important trip-planning decision is the amount of walking you can comfortably undertake. A modest riverside path and a steep mountain route should never be presented as interchangeable stops.
For an easy-going day, Kaghu near Pirveli Balda pairs a forest approach with a waterfall viewpoint. For an experienced hiking party, the Toba cascade and Oniore's cave-fed fall form a longer, more demanding circuit from the Balda valley. Martvili Canyon itself is another attraction, with managed visitor arrangements rather than the same informal trailheads. Use Martvili as your accommodation base, decide on one principal waterfall outing, and let weather determine any additions.
Kaghu: the short and shaded waterfall option
Kaghu, also known as Zhuzhgha, is the most approachable of the three for travelers who want the experience of green river forest without a strenuous trek. The Georgian National Tourism Administration describes a short driveable access road, then a footbridge and a comparatively easy path beside the Abasha River through boxwood forest. Because it lies near Pirveli Balda, arrange transport using the village name rather than assuming every driver will understand a waterfall nickname.
The scene suits a slow photo stop or a gentle walk with time for a nearby Megrelian meal. The official account mentions cold-water swimming and seasonal cafes, but neither lifeguards nor daily cafe operation should be assumed. After rainfall, even an officially easy path can become slick and a pool can turn hazardous. This outing is primarily about the forest and cascade, with swimming at most an optional decision based on the actual river conditions.
Toba: the big cascade that requires commitment
The 234-metre Toba Cascade is the dramatic mountain option. Georgia Travel places it in the Toba River basin near Meore Balda and links it to Arsen Okrojanashvili Cave. Its route from the monastery side takes roughly five kilometres and two hours to reach the cascade, with a particularly steep single-file approach to a higher viewpoint. The protected-area authority gives related route details under the Toba Waterfall and Cave natural monument.
Check the destination name carefully before setting out: a different waterfall called Toba is listed near Chkhorotsku, much farther west. For this Martvili itinerary, the necessary clues are Balda, the 234-metre cascade and Arsen Okrojanashvili Cave. A guide familiar with the terrain is essential for sensible decisions about exposed paths and weather. Exploration inside the source cave requires specialist arrangements and is not part of an ordinary waterfall hike.
Oniore: the cave waterfall beyond the Toba route
Oniore lies near Toba First Cave, another named natural monument in Martvili Municipality. Georgia Travel records two drops there: an inner fall of about 21 metres and an outside waterfall of 84 metres. In contrast to Toba's tall rock-face cascade, Oniore's defining feature is the relationship between cave opening and water. The surrounding Colchic woodland makes the final approach feel particularly enclosed and remote.
The published access description sends hikers from the Balda Monastery parking area to a rest stop and onward over a difficult final section. A local guide is strongly recommended. The official Meore Balda loop links the two waterfalls with about an hour's hike between them, but the route is a demanding full-day undertaking once travel and rest are included. If your group cannot comfortably complete the whole circuit, choose one main objective with your guide.
What to pair with Martvili Canyon and where to stay
Martvili Canyon is a protected-area visitor attraction with its own managed entrance and operating arrangements. A canyon visit can work well alongside Kaghu if transport, weather and opening times align. It is less sensible to tack the canyon onto a full Toba–Oniore expedition, since arriving late after hours on an uneven trail leaves little time for either place. Check the canyon's current visitor conditions directly with the Agency of Protected Areas rather than relying on an old combined-tour advert.
Martvili offers lodging, restaurants and a cultural stop at its monastery, making it a useful base for a waterfall trip. Confirm whether transport to Pirveli or Meore Balda is included in any guide quote; the town is not the actual walking trailhead. Ask about the day's rain, recommended footwear, safe turnaround points and return pickup before departure. Keep an alternate town-and-canyon plan ready if the upper Toba valley is too wet to enter safely.
