Mestia has the broadest accommodation and service choice in Svaneti, so I would settle there before attempting the more remote chapter. Two or three nights gives time for a local hike, weather adjustment and the practical work of confirming onward transport.
Stay centrally if you are relying on shared transport, drivers or early departures. If you have your own vehicle and a clear plan, a more outlying property can trade convenience for scenery without creating the same friction.
Choose a day trip to Ushguli when you value simplicity
A day trip keeps the luggage in Mestia and avoids another check-in. It can be the right choice for travelers who want to see Ushguli without building the whole Svaneti route around it, but the day is long enough that current road conditions and return timing need attention.
I would not stack another major activity on the same day. The value is in giving the route and village time rather than treating Ushguli as a quick stop between unrelated plans.
Stay overnight in Ushguli when the evening and next morning matter
An overnight can change the feel of the visit because you are there outside the day-trip window. It makes most sense when the accommodation, meals and next-day transport are all confirmed and when you have enough total Svaneti time that the extra check-in does not compress Mestia.
For trekkers, the logic changes again: Ushguli may be part of a multi-day route rather than an isolated extension. In that case, plan lodging, luggage and meals as one trail system instead of separate booking decisions.
