Where to Stay in Svaneti: Mestia, Adishi, Mazeri & Ushguli Area

Svaneti is the guide where I most want travelers to resist the temptation to treat a whole region as one hotel search. Mestia, Mazeri, Adishi and villages around Ushguli serve different days and different routes. I would decide what I want to wake up and do next, then choose the stay that supports it.

Nino's note

Svaneti feels like the place to leave a little space in the itinerary. I would rather have one unhurried mountain morning than schedule every hour. The prettier the route becomes, the more I want the accommodation plan to be simple.

How recommendations are selected

This guide uses the current Georgian Stays inventory. Property selection considers public rating evidence, review volume, destination variety and useful comparison evidence such as a sourced property photo, mapped position or direct website. Listings are not paid placements, and current prices or availability should be checked with the linked property or booking source.

Mestia when you want the easiest Svaneti base

Mestia is where I would start for a first Svaneti stay. It has the deepest accommodation inventory and the clearest mix of restaurants, transport and day-trip options, which makes the mountain logistics much kinder.

If I were visiting without my own car, I would lean even more strongly toward Mestia and verify current transport for each outing. It is the base that gives you the most flexibility if weather or energy changes the plan.

Mazeri when I want a quieter valley setting

Mazeri appeals when the point of the stay is to be in a smaller mountain setting rather than in the regional hub. I would choose it for a route that benefits from the valley itself, not as a default substitute for Mestia.

That means arrival planning matters. I would confirm the current road approach, transport and meal options with the property or booking source, especially if the stay sits between hiking days.

Adishi when the overnight is part of a trekking route

Adishi is a route-specific choice. I would book it because the trek or road plan places me there, not because I am browsing for a generic Svaneti hotel. In smaller villages, location and host communication can matter more than having a polished standalone website.

For this kind of stay, I would focus on what is verifiable now: current guest feedback, the exact village, arrival instructions and the booking source. Simpler accommodation can be exactly right when it fits the route.

Ushguli area when I want the upper valley to have its own night

If the itinerary reaches the Ushguli area, staying overnight can make sense because it reduces the feeling of rushing in and out. I like the idea of letting the upper valley be its own chapter rather than squeezing it between long transfers.

I would still treat the smaller villages as a different accommodation environment from Mestia. Confirm what the property offers, how you will arrive and how you plan to continue the next day.

Choose the village before the room

This is my strongest Svaneti rule. A beautiful guesthouse in the wrong village creates more work than a simpler stay in the right one. I would pin every hiking day and transfer first, then search for accommodation around those points.

It is also better SEO advice because it answers the real question behind 'where to stay in Svaneti': the best base depends on the route, not on a universal ranking of properties.

My little checklist

What I would check before booking

  • Use Mestia as the default first base unless a specific route calls for a smaller village.
  • Confirm current transport and road access before booking remote mountain stays.
  • For trekking itineraries, match each overnight to the next day's route.
  • Check meal details and arrival instructions on the current booking source for small village stays.
  • Leave schedule room for weather and slower mountain travel.

Practical questions

Where to stay in Svaneti: FAQs

Should I stay in Mestia or Ushguli?

Mestia is the easier all-round base. I would stay around Ushguli when the upper valley itself is a key part of the route and an overnight there reduces backtracking.

Where should I stay in Svaneti for trekking?

Choose the village according to the actual trekking stage. Mestia works as the main hub, while places such as Adishi or the Ushguli area make sense when they fall naturally on the route.

Can I visit Svaneti without a car?

Yes, but I would make Mestia the practical base and verify current transfers to trailheads or smaller villages. Remote accommodation needs more transport planning.
