Canyons Near Kutaisi: Martvili, Okatse & Kinchkha Compared
Kutaisi is a convenient anchor for western Georgia because mountains, caves, historic towns and waterfalls branch out in different directions. 'Canyons near Kutaisi' sounds like a simple search, but it includes places whose visiting experiences differ sharply. Martvili is a river-level limestone gorge with a managed short circuit and an optional boat. Okatse presents a demanding approach to a suspended cliffside walkway. Kinchkha, also called Okatse Waterfall, is a separate cascade that can reward a waterfall-focused day.
Their names can overlap on tour posters, and the temptation is to cover them all in one overstuffed route. A better plan begins with the kind of experience you actually enjoy and your group's stamina. These landscapes are not a generic collection of turquoise postcards. Each has a distinct visitor centre or access point, weather rules and a different reason to stay a little longer in western Georgia.
Martvili for the river's intimate scale
At Martvili Canyon, the Abasha River squeezes through limestone beneath a dense green canopy. The Agency of Protected Areas describes a circular visitor route of roughly 700 metres with viewpoints, bridges and historic stone steps, beginning near Inchkhuri village in Samegrelo. This is a managed tourist attraction rather than a freely swimmable section of river. The scenery can be rewarding from the walking circuit alone, even before considering the boats.
The short optional boat journey gives visitors a river-level view of the walls. It is charged separately and is not allowed in rainy or snowy weather under the operator's rules. For a family or mixed group, the compact visitor circuit may be preferable to Okatse's extensive steps, but that does not mean everyone can use the entire facility without assistance. Ask about the particular route and boarding conditions if someone has mobility needs.
Okatse for a view that involves effort
Okatse Canyon lies at Gordi in Imereti and offers a striking contrast. Visitors approach through historic forest to a 780-metre suspended section mounted along a cliff, finishing at a panoramic platform. The Agency's official route notes substantial metal steps as well as a longer approach. The visitor's sense of height is part of the attraction, not a side effect to hide in a vague 'easy nature' description.
The management prohibits use of the hanging walkway in rainy and snowy conditions and sets a minimum-age rule for the trail. If anyone in the group has a fear of heights or cannot manage repeated steps, Okatse may not be the best fit. A good alternative is not to force the visit, but to choose another managed attraction whose experience matches the party's abilities and the weather that day.
Kinchkha is a waterfall, not the Okatse walkway
The names cause confusion because the waterfall is also known as Okatse or Kinchkha Waterfall. The Agency identifies it separately near Kinchkha village in Khoni municipality, describing a multi-step cascade in the Satsikvilo gorge. It can pair geographically with the Gordi area, but it is not part of the same suspended visitor trail or a guaranteed bonus included in the canyon experience.
If you prefer the force and sound of falling water to an engineered height experience, a visit focused on Kinchkha may be more satisfying. Water levels, spray, slippery ground and current conservation rules still matter. Do not assume a beautiful basin is available or safe for swimming, and check official access information rather than following an unsupervised river-edge shortcut suggested by a photo sharing account.
A practical Kutaisi itinerary without the rush
Kutaisi's accommodation, restaurants and regional transport make it a flexible base for all three directions. Pick the primary experience first and arrange transport to its exact entrance. A private driver may help connect stops, but a road journey alone does not account for ticket sessions, approach walks and unexpected closure. If choosing Martvili, the town itself and wider Samegrelo can justify more unhurried time.
For travellers staying several nights, split the landmarks into separate days: one day for caves around Tskaltubo, another for a canyon and perhaps a nearby waterfall if conditions permit. This creates room for food and unexpected discoveries. The successful trip is not the one that includes the most pins on a route map; it is the one that returns to Kutaisi with energy left to enjoy the city.
Plan the visit and the journey back.
- Martvili
- Inchkhuri visitor centre in Samegrelo: compact managed river circuit; optional extra boat subject to weather.
- Okatse
- Gordi visitor centre in Imereti: longer forest/step-heavy excursion and exposed hanging walkway.
- Kinchkha
- Separate Okatse/Kinchkha Waterfall natural monument near Kinchkha village, not the same trail.
- Rain
- Martvili boat and Okatse walkway have explicit wet-weather restrictions; conditions can also affect waterfall access.
- Children and mobility
- Ask for age rules, steps and route suitability for each attraction before booking.
- Accommodation
- Kutaisi for flexible multi-day routes or a Martvili-area stay for slower Samegrelo exploration.

Which canyon near Kutaisi is easiest to plan?
Martvili has a compact managed walking route, whereas Okatse requires a substantially longer approach and many steps. Both have site-specific constraints; for visitors with mobility needs, confirm exact surfaces, barriers and current arrangements before choosing either.
Can I combine Okatse Canyon and Kinchkha Waterfall?
They are distinct nearby attractions and may be combined with suitable transport and conditions, but do not confuse them with one ticket or entrance. The total visiting time includes forest approaches, transfers and any queues or closures.
Is Martvili Canyon actually in Kutaisi?
No. Martvili Canyon is in Samegrelo, in Martvili municipality near Inchkhuri. Kutaisi is a convenient base for reaching the region, not the location of the canyon itself.
What if it rains on my canyon day?
Check the Agency of Protected Areas and site operator before travelling. Martvili boating and the Okatse suspended walkway have rain or snow restrictions. An indoor cave may still have its own operating limits, so do not replace one outing with another without confirmation.

Access, weather, opening hours and bookable experiences can change. Check the relevant operator or visitor authority for your date.
