Okatse Canyon Walkway: Stairs, Cliff Trail & Access Guide

The familiar photograph shows a walkway attached to a cliff wall high above a green gorge. At Okatse Canyon near Gordi, the engineering becomes part of the experience: you move from forest toward a suspended path that changes your relationship with the river below. The drop and openness can be thrilling, but they are also precisely why this should not be described as an effortless family sightseeing stop.

The Agency of Protected Areas lists a 780-metre hanging section within a much longer visitor outing, reached by a forest approach through the historic Dadiani parkland. Its trail description mentions numerous metal steps and an overall walking experience estimated in hours, not minutes. Treat the climb, the suspended section, weather and personal tolerance for heights as four separate considerations before choosing Okatse.

01 / The details

The forest belongs to the canyon experience

Okatse's route starts at the visitor centre in Gordi, where a paved forest approach passes through the historic Dadiani landscape. The agency describes roughly 2.3 kilometres from the centre to the main canyon checkpoint before the suspended section. This is a meaningful approach, especially in warm weather or for visitors already tired after a morning elsewhere. A route on a visitor map can conceal the effort of reaching the view itself.

The forest is not dead time. Its canopy, ruined structures and changes in light provide a quieter prelude to the cliff. If you plan the outing with enough daylight and water, the shift from enclosed greenery to a wide valley outlook can become the most memorable part. If your goal is a near-roadside photograph and little walking, another attraction may be more suitable than rushing Okatse and complaining about its distance.

02 / The details

The suspended walkway and its serious steps

The official route describes the 780-metre hanging walkway and a roughly 20-metre panoramic final platform. It also notes 989 metal steps on the route. Exact access arrangements may change, but that is enough to rule out calling the standard experience universally easy or step-free. People with knee problems, significant mobility limitations or intense fear of exposed heights should investigate another viewpoint rather than assume assistance will remove the demands.

A suspended viewpoint can feel very different once you are on it. Railings and managed construction do not eliminate the sensation of space beneath your feet. Follow the site's permitted route and staff instructions, avoid crowding the railings and never climb or lean beyond barriers for a picture. If part of your group does not feel comfortable, agree on a separate plan before beginning the long approach.

03 / The details

The weather can close the signature attraction

The Agency of Protected Areas explicitly states that walking the Okatse Canyon route is not allowed during rain or snow. This is a safety restriction, not a claim that a traveller with a waterproof jacket can override the rules. A misty canyon can look beautiful in photography while the suspended section remains closed. The operator's present decision matters more than any generic internet promise of year-round sightseeing.

Check the official site before leaving Kutaisi and again if conditions change during the journey. Do not prepay for a tightly choreographed multi-attraction day unless you know how weather closures are handled. In the wider area, Kinchkha Waterfall is a distinct natural monument, not an automatic alternative with identical weather or path conditions. Both deserve their own access checks rather than being treated as interchangeable stops.

04 / The details

Choosing Okatse instead of Martvili or Kinchkha

Okatse is best for visitors who specifically want a cliff walkway and broad gorge perspective. Martvili Canyon offers a shorter managed river circuit and optional water-level boating when permitted, making it a different style of visit. Kinchkha, also called Okatse Waterfall, is a cascading landmark elsewhere in Khoni municipality. Despite sharing the Okatse name, it is not the hanging walkway itself.

Kutaisi is a useful base for a sequence of Imereti and Samegrelo outings, but do not calculate your day's feasibility from kilometres alone. Visitor-centre access, ticket queues, the approach to the hanging section and the energy spent on steps all count. If you need a slower day, make Okatse the one principal attraction, eat in the region and return without trying to fit every nearby waterfall into the afternoon.

Common questions

Useful answers before setting out.

How long is the Okatse hanging walkway?

The Agency describes about 780 metres of suspended trail, but the total excursion includes a longer forest approach and substantial stairs. Do not confuse the walkway's length with the full round-trip walking distance or total time needed.

Is the Okatse Canyon walkway suitable for small children?

The Agency's canyon service page says walkers must be over six years old. A separate agency page also lists a minimum height of 1.20 m, so check current enforcement of both rules before paying. Even an eligible child needs to be comfortable with a long approach, exposed cliff section and many steps.

Does Okatse Canyon operate when it rains?

The official services page says walking the trail is prohibited in rainy and snowy weather. Always respect a closure even if the skies appear clearer at the visitor centre or an unofficial viewpoint nearby looks accessible.

Are Okatse Canyon and Okatse Waterfall the same attraction?

No. Okatse Canyon is the Gordi-side forest-and-hanging-walkway visitor route; Okatse/Kinchkha Waterfall is a separate natural monument near Kinchkha village. They are nearby in the broader area but require distinct access and time planning.
