Waterfalls Near Kutaisi: Which Imereti Day Trip Is Worth Your Time?
Kutaisi is a practical base for discovering western Georgia's rivers, limestone gorges and wooded valleys. But a search for waterfalls near Kutaisi bundles together quite different destinations: a developed viewing attraction in Khoni municipality, a lake beside a small cascade, and lesser-known waterfalls where the final approach matters as much as the drive. The best day trip depends on how much walking you want, whether someone in your party dislikes heights, and how confidently you can arrange onward transport.
The names are a first source of confusion. Kinchkha Waterfall is also called Okatse Waterfall; Okatse Canyon is a nearby but separate managed attraction with a suspended cliff walk. Lomina is usually described as a lake with a waterfall, while the waterfall at Khani village is identified by Kutaisi's tourism site as Sakukhara. Choose a site by its actual entrance, trail and landscape rather than assuming these names all refer to one canyon complex.
Kinchkha: choose it when a dramatic waterfall is the main event
Kinchkha, in Khoni municipality, is the most straightforward starting point for a waterfall-focused outing. Georgia Travel identifies it as a three-stage cascade in the Satsiskvilo River valley, set against chalkstone cliffs. The Agency of Protected Areas calls it Okatse (Kinchkha) Waterfall. Its scale makes the viewing experience quite different from standing beside a small forest cascade: the attraction is the height and sequence of the falling water, seen in the wider gorge setting.
Visitor descriptions from the tourism authority and Kutaisi Travel refer to constructed walkways or viewpoints, but a route's current opening status, wet-weather restrictions, available services and ticket conditions must be checked with the protected-area operator. Do not assume every section of the gorge is safely walkable or that you can reach the water below. If your group wants a recognizable destination rather than a difficult-to-locate trailhead, start here and arrange the final road approach before setting off from Kutaisi.
Lomina and Khani: appealing smaller stops with more route uncertainty
Georgia Travel describes Lomina Lake in Khoni municipality as a clear pool fed by a relatively small waterfall near the Okatse landscape. This is a different kind of outing from Kinchkha: the appeal is the intimate water-and-rock scene rather than a towering cascade. The official description mentions a final walk but does not establish that the route is staffed, continuously maintained, or suitable in all weather. Confirm the path and safe approach locally; treat swimming references in promotional descriptions as possibilities to assess on the day, not permission or proof of safety.
For a different direction, the Kutaisi tourism portal identifies Sakukhara Waterfall at Khani village in Baghdati municipality. Its description warns of a steep final path through natural terrain and also mentions the unusual spot known locally as Kvakhvrelia, where water passes through rock. This is a walking-focused excursion for visitors equipped for steep ground. The regional Georgia Travel overview also names Khani Waterfall, but it does not supply the trail instructions needed to locate it independently; use the Sakukhara listing and verify the local approach.
Samtsvera offers an alternative direction from Kutaisi
Imereti has waterfall options beyond the Khoni side of the map. Georgia Travel places Samtsvera Waterfall near Zestafoni, between the villages of Zovreti and Kveda Sazano, where water drops toward the Dzusa River valley. The authority describes a short approach from the road and a shaded riverside environment. For a traveler already going east, it can be a more sensible choice than crossing back toward Khoni simply because Kinchkha appears higher on a popularity list.
A short trail on a destination page is not a promise about current footing. After rain, soil, rock and stream levels can change quickly even near paved roads. Check the last access point and whether a local path or parking approach is still usable. Do not assume the swimming mentioned on a tourism page is appropriate at all river levels. A well-planned eastern-Imereti visit can pair one waterfall with surrounding villages or cultural stops without rushing across several distant valleys.
Build one coherent outing from your Kutaisi base
If a full day is available, the natural pairing to investigate is Okatse Canyon and Kinchkha Waterfall: both are associated with Khoni municipality, but the canyon visitor center is in Gordi and the waterfall lies near Kinchkha village. They have separate visitor logistics. The canyon's long approach through Dadiani forest and high walkway may take more time and involve more stairs than a waterfall-only stop. Ask the Agency of Protected Areas which facilities and routes are open before promising both to your group.
Keep the day simple if you rely on public transport or a hired driver. A ride to a municipality or village does not necessarily end at the official entrance, and the return from a little-known waterfall may be harder to arrange than the outbound journey. Confirm the pickup point, waiting time, trailhead and expected return in daylight. For a family or mixed-ability group, choose one managed sight and a flexible second stop. Use Kutaisi's broad accommodation choice as your base and spend the saved time enjoying the landscape.
Plan the visit and the journey back.

- Quieter alternatives
- Lomina Lake's waterfall, Sakukhara near Khani village, and Samtsvera near Zestafoni require location-specific access checks.
- Before departure

Kinchkha, also called Okatse Waterfall, is a well-documented three-stage cascade in Khoni municipality and a common focus for a day trip.

It is more realistic to choose one area. Khoni, Baghdati and the Zestafoni side of Imereti involve different approaches; road and trail conditions determine what fits.
Do I need a car to visit Imereti waterfalls?
Independent transport or a confirmed transfer often simplifies the final leg. Even when transport reaches a nearby village, check how you will reach the actual trail and return.
Confirm the current visitor details.
Access, weather, opening hours and bookable experiences can change. Check the relevant operator or visitor authority for your date.
