Tbilisi to Batumi: Train, Rental Car or Transfer?

Tbilisi to Batumi can be a simple city-to-city move or the backbone of a westbound road trip. The official Georgian Railway currently lists two daily fast Tbilisi–Batumi services, while a rental car turns the same corridor into a multi-stop itinerary. I would decide whether the journey is transport time or travel time before choosing the mode.

How recommendations are selected

This guide uses the current Georgian Stays inventory. Property selection considers public rating evidence, review volume, destination variety and useful comparison evidence such as a sourced property photo, mapped position or direct website. Listings are not paid placements, and current prices or availability should be checked with the linked property or booking source.

Quick answer

Choose the train when you mainly need to move between Tbilisi and Batumi without managing a car. Choose a rental when you want several western stops and the vehicle remains useful after arrival. Compare a private transfer when door-to-door luggage handling or schedule control matters more than the independence of self-driving.

The train is the cleanest comparison for a city-to-city trip

As checked on 28 September 2026, Georgian Railway's general schedule lists two daily fast Tbilisi–Batumi services: one departing Tbilisi in the morning and another in the late afternoon, with corresponding return services from Batumi. I would confirm the live booking schedule before travel rather than treat those times as permanent.

For me, the train wins when Batumi itself is the destination and I do not need a car during the stay. The remaining planning question is how the station transfer connects to the exact hotel or coastal base.

A rental car earns its place when the westbound route has several stops

Booking.com currently shows one-way rental availability with some suppliers in Georgia. That makes Tbilisi pickup and a different-city return worth comparing for a genuine cross-country road trip.

I would not rent just to imitate the train with more work. The car should unlock stops, overnight bases or onward coastal travel that matter enough to justify driving, parking and return logistics.

Kutaisi can turn the transfer into an itinerary chapter

If Kutaisi, Imereti sights or western Georgia are already priorities, breaking the route can make more sense than treating Tbilisi–Batumi as one long movement day. This is where an extra hotel night can add value rather than simply add friction.

I would choose the Kutaisi stop because I want time there, not because an itinerary template says every road trip needs an overnight in the middle.

Choose the Batumi-area stay before finalizing the last leg

A central Batumi hotel, Gonio guesthouse and Kvariati beach stay create different final connections from the train station, road or transfer drop-off. I would choose the base early enough that the transport plan reaches the actual bed rather than a generic city center.

For a car-free city stay, the train plus local transfer can be exceptionally simple. For a coastal road trip, the rental can remain useful beyond Batumi itself.

My little checklist

What I would check before booking

  • Check Georgian Railway's live schedule before travel; published times can change.
  • Do not rent a car merely to duplicate a direct train journey.
  • For one-way rental, compare the full drop fee and supported return city.
  • Choose central Batumi versus a quieter coast base before planning the last transfer.
