The places around Kutaisi sit in different directions, so I would group the route rather than collect names. Prometheus Cave naturally pulls the day toward Tskaltubo, while Gelati sits in a different direction from the city.
That is where a rental can become useful: not because one attraction is impossible without a car, but because several separate outings can be combined more efficiently when I control the sequence.
Martvili Canyon is the point where I would compare a wider western day
Martvili is far enough from a simple city walk that I would decide whether it belongs in a dedicated day, a broader western route or a separate overnight elsewhere. I would not add it automatically just because it appears on every western-Georgia list.
If it is part of the trip, I would compare current tour/transfer options with a rental car that can also serve other western stops.
Let the airport and next destination influence day three
If the trip continues to Batumi, Mestia or Tbilisi, I would design the final Kutaisi day around that handoff. A rental return, airport shuttle or intercity departure can make one side of the city more convenient than another.
This is also where a one-way rental can be worth checking: the sightseeing car may become the onward road-trip car instead of being returned before another transfer.
